Marissa Mayer Fires Yahoo COO

henrique-de-castro-yahoo-coo-1Yahoo! chief operating officer (COO) Henrique de Castro has been fired by CEO Marissa Mayer. The former Google employee was the first of many acquisitions by Mayer beginning in 2012, and also her first “big” buy 15 months ago.

In an internal memo shared by a source of Re/code’s Kara Swisher, Mayer states:

During my own reflection, I made the difficult decision that our COO, Henrique de Castro, should leave the company.

marissa_new4Apparently, it’s been a long time coming, with tensions running high from almost the beginning of Castro’s employment. After fumbling through his presentation at last year’s Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) conference, which showed no clear direction for monetizing Yahoo!’s search results, he and Mayer were at odds. Although not really doing Yahoo! any favors, things can’t be all that bad for Henrique, though: Castro leaves the company with a $20 million limited stock bonus.
