The founder of Microsoft Corporation and now billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates, has once again made it to the top of Forbes richest people list. Gates total net worth clocks in at a staggering $76 billion dollars up by nearly $10 billion in 2013. He effectively bumps Carlos Slim off the top spot into second place. While Gates is at the top of the heap when it comes to wealth, he’s also one of the more generous billionaires out there. He operates the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which donates funds to a variety of charitable organizations.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest transparently operated charitable foundation in the world, the foundation allows benefactors access to information regarding how its money is being spent. As of 2007, Bill and Melinda Gates were the second-most generous philanthropists in America, having given over $28 billion to charity;the couple plan to eventually donate 95% of their wealth to charity. from Wikipedia

According to Forbes there are a total of 1645 billionaires on record with 492 of them being in the United States. Mark Zuckerberg is a notable name as he is climbing his way up the list as he doubled his fortune to an astounding $28.5 billion dollars, that’s insane, all from running a social networking site. Two new faces, that are connected to Zuckerberg, Jan Koum and Brian Acton of What’s App, also showed up on the list. Of course Zuckerberg’s recent purchase of What’s App for $19 billion dollars helped get them on the list at 202 and 551. Would really be amazing to see more of these billionaires make the move into philanthropy like Bill Gates has. Whatever you think of him, it certainly is respectful what he’s doing with his billions for some worthy causes. What do you think? Is Bill Gates doing a great job? Could he do more? Should others see him as an example? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter and Facebook.
