Apple has long been known to march to the beat of their own drummer. It’s a very rare occurrence that they follow what other industry competitors are doing in terms of hardware and software. One of the things Samsung and Windows has been doing on their tablets (and phablets for that matter) is multitasking. TechnoBuffalo (via 9to5 Mac) is reporting sources have revealed that iOS8 will indeed allow users to multitask on the iPad by having two applications open at once with the ability to interact with each other. The new interface is said to only function in landscape mode, competitors allow for portrait mode too but the talk is landscape only for iPad.

Apple is making some interesting (rumored) moves in 2014, a lot of it out of the norm for them. These are moves they should have been making years ago but it is quite possible that Apple discounted the competition in favor of relying on their normal march of operations.  This is really kind of shocking; if history teaches us anything, it teaches us that remaining stagnant and within your own box often times results in getting left behind. Apple still has life in them and making these moves now will certainly help them get back to competing.

Ignoring the fanboys from the other side of the aisle will be key.  There will no doubt be an endless stream of meme’s, late night talk show jokes, social media hate and the like being poured out towards the company. I will admit that Apple has been lagging in features and stagnant in design (especially software) but as a user of both Android and iOS I want both companies to succeed. Adding these types of features to iOS8 is a step in the right direction. Now, please overhaul the UI guys, we need a refresh there too!
