We all know over the last several years the patent wars between major companies has been in the spotlight. The latest ignorant patent comes from Amazon in which they seek to patent photography against a white background. Well, we’re not the only ones who think Amazon is smoking dope, Stephen Colbert took to his show to discuss Amazon’s idiocy and file a patent of his own. Video after the break.
This piece of satire was brilliant! It illustrates so well how out of hand the whole patent system has become. What do we patent next, the act of tying ones shoes? Or how about if McDonalds patents the shape of a hamburger? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for companies protecting their intellectual property but it seems lately these companies have been hitting the happy sauce a little too hard. Patents are meant to protect great ideas, not basic common sense. To be honest, it’s the US Patent Office that’s making itself look the fool here, for passing some of these patents through in the first place.
I don’t have the answers on how to solve these insane patent issues we’re experiencing but I have enough common sense to know that filing a patent on photography against  a white background is a little crazy. With the country in a stir about Net Neutrality, let’s hope we don’t forget we need to figure out what to do about this equally important matter. What do you think?
