Back in May of 2001 Cliff Edwards of Bloomberg Business Week had an article titled, “Sorry, Steve: Here’s Why Apple Stores Won’t Work”. Now thirteen years later Apple seems to be doing just fine in the retail space, expanding much further than even I realized. Check out this animated map put together by retale.com which shows the expansion of Apple stores worldwide since 2001.

While Apple does find itself in a challenging situation with competition heating up in the mobile space and patent battles with Samsung, they’re not out of the picture just yet. With 424 stores in 16 countries the recent hire of Angela Ahrendts and the purchase of Beats looming on the horizon. Apple doesn’t look to be backing out of the retail game anytime soon. Steve is long gone and it appears Tim Cook is attempting to “think different” and is trying to move Apple forward in this new space filled with competition.

Just think about it for just a minute, 2001 Mr. Edwards says Apple Stores won’t work. Now we’re in 2014 and Tim Cook is trying bold new ideas. Will history be on Apple’s side again in 13 years? Will someone be eating their words when Apple is standing as one of the top tech companies? It remains to be seen. While I think Apple is making some great moves and choices there are areas I think they could improve. I touched on iOS on a previous article today and that’s a huge deal. It’s time to refresh the UI Tim Cook. Tim to freshen up the house and rearrange the furniture. I want Apple to succeed. I want Apple to continue on. We can’t have any one company rule the world. Cause then we’ll really be stuck without innovation. Congrats to Apple on 13 years! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter and Facebook.
