TYLT-VU-2

Wireless charging has come a long way over the past year. Phones like the Nexus 5 have improved their efficiency at wireless charging and third party charging solutions are vastly better. One such charging solution is the TYLT VU Wireless charging stand. TYLT makes some excellent products all around, we have reviewed several of them here on Techaeris.

The Experience

The VU is packaged nicely, just like every other TYLT product we’ve unboxed. The design is beautiful, minimal, modern and just looks very nice all around. Taking it out of the box you’d expect something heavier than it actually is. The VU is very lightweight and easy to move from place to place. Included in the package is an AC Adapter that supplies the VU with its power. The cord tucks in under the VU and comes out of the bottom so you can feed it to your wall outlet and tuck it out of the way.

We tested the TYLT VU with the Nexus 5 but most any phone that uses Qi wireless charging should work with the VU. Placing the Nexus 5 on the VU in portrait or landscape mode activated the wireless charging in a matter of a second or two. We even tested it with a TPU case on the phone and it worked flawlessly. We did not have a thicker or larger case such as an Otterbox or Ballistic case to test with so we can’t report what effect those would have on the wireless charging signal.

It’s widely accepted that wireless charging is not as efficient  as plugging directly into the wall with your charging cable but as I eluded to earlier, wireless charging has improved over the past year.   That by no means is to say that wireless charging is bad.  While it took longer to charge to full than a direct outlet, it only added an hour or two to the charging time. Very acceptable from my point of view (this will also depend on how large of a battery you have).  While it’s still quicker to plug directly into a power outlet the VU is handy to have on a desk or in the kitchen at arms length. You can place your phone on the VU to let it charge and still retrieve it quickly without fumbling with a cord.

Conclusion

The VU is an excellent wireless charger, it’s lightweight and portable so you can take it where you need it most. Charging your phone to full doesn’t take too much longer than a direct outlet charge and it’s super convenient to have the phone in arms reach without having to futz with wires. The price tag for this convenience is $69.99 which some people may scoff at. The bottom line is that you’re paying for a well designed piece of hardware that is backed by an excellent company. I would recommend the VU to anyone seeking a wireless charging solution and give it 4.5 stars. While the price tag may be on the higher side, it’s well worth the money and the handiness of the product. Hit the link below to get your TYLT VU!
