Yesterday, Samsung announced the 10.5 and 8.4-inch Galaxy Tab S tablets. Samsung is touting these Super AMOLED devices as their thinnest and lightest tablets to date.
“The tablet is becoming a popular personal viewing device for enjoying content, which makes the quality of the display a critical feature,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics. “With the launch of the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung is setting the industry bar higher for the entire mobile industry. It will provide consumers with a visual and entertainment experience that brings colors to life, beautifully packaged in a sleek and ultra-portable mobile device.”
Both sizes of the Galaxy Tab S will feature 2560×1600 (16:10 ratio) WQXGA Super AMOLED LED displays which will display more than 90% of the Adobe RGB colour gamut and have a 100,000:1 contrast ratio. These tablets integrate Samsung’s Adaptive Display which dynamically alters gamma, saturation, and sharpness based not only on the surrounding environment but also on what app is being used. AMOLED Cinema and AMOLED Photo pre-set modes will adjust the displays for video and photo viewing.
The 10.5-inch Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Tab S weighs in at only 465g while the smaller 8.4-inch version weighs 294g. Both tablets will have a 6.6mm thickness.
Samsung will debut its magazine service called Papergarden which provides an optimized viewing environment for interactive digital magazines. Samsung has also partnered with various mobile content and service providers and Galaxy Tab S owners can expect to receive:
- 3 months of unlimited free membership to Marvel’s Marvel Unlimited app
- A free book for Kindle for Samsung even month through Samsung Book Deals
- A copy of the Academy Award winning movie “Gravity” as well as an assortment of magazines and books from Google Play
- Netflix will be available for the first time in HD for Galaxy users (in select countries)
- and more
Additional features include calling from your phone to the tablet with a call forwarding feature in SideSync 3.0, QuickConnect to find and connect to nearby devices for easy sharing, Multi User Mode for personalized profiles, built in Fingerprint Scanner, and Kids Mode – a specially designed interface with kid-friendly applications.
Also launching with the Galaxy Tab S will be a selection of accessories including a Book Cover which offers three different display angles, a Simple Cover for lightweight protection, and an ergonomically designed ultra slim Bluetooth Keyboard.
The Galaxy Tab S will be available in select markets starting in July 2014. Both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi/LTE versions will be available in 16 or 32GB options with up to 128GB MicroSD support. The 10.4 and 8.4-inch versions will be available in Dazzling White or Titanium Bronze.
