Overview
The first thing I noticed about the Powerspring 5 is how short it is, yes short. Most of the power cases for the iPhone 5s tend to add about a half inch to the phone due to the internals added to the bottom for charging; not so with the Powerspring 5. Instead they opted to tuck the lightning connector into the body of the powercase itself, which was actually a good design choice. Doing this keeps the bottom free of any plastic and exposes the lightning port and headphone port to easily use any peripherals you might want to use. Other cases often are so bulky at the bottom they cover these ports up. To be fair, they also include a headphone extension but that doesn’t free up the lightning port.
The Spring 5 is actually pretty slim for a powercase, it adds some bulk to the iPhone but it’s not overwhelming and it’s easy to handle. The shell is made of a slick glossy plastic which can lead to some grip issues but I never dropped the phone with this case. The glossy plastic also picks up fingerprints fairly easily, though the glossy plastic is easier to clean than some of the matte plastic cases out there. The power connector is made of a flexible rubber that is easily pushed back into the body of the case, though you will have to give it a firm push to get it flush to the body.
As far as the performance of the battery, I found the Spring 5 charged my iPhone from 15% to full in a few hours. It definitely does what it’s supposed to do; gives your iPhone that extra battery power to get you through long days. The 2200mAh battery is going to be a lifesaver for those days you might get stuck somewhere without a charger or on a long road trip. It definitely saved me when I was stuck in an area with no Wi-Fi and only Edge/3G service. My iPhone was constantly searching for a signal (and I accidentally tried uploading pics to social media) which was draining the battery fast. If I didn’t have the Spring 5, the phone would have been dead.
Conclusion
The Powerspring 5 from MiLi is an excellent powercase at a reasonable price. I’ve reviewed a few power cases that are upwards of $100 but the MiLi can be had on Amazon right now for $43.49. That is an awesome price for an external battery and case. I give the Powerspring 5 four and a half stars out of five. It’s a nice compact design for a power case. It has a nice 2200 mAh battery that does what you need it to do. It works well as a protective case for your phone and it doesn’t break the bank coming in at under $45. While it’s not perfect, it’s got plenty going for it to overlook some of the minor things, like fingerprints and slickness of material.
