Andy Rubin – The Godfather Of Android – Is Leaving

Hardly a couple of months goes by that there isnt some kind of Andy Rubin news. The unsettled and undecided man at Google moves around a lot, changes direction a lot and is currently tinkering with Androids. This may be the last Google and Andy Rubin headline however, because he is leaving Google!

It would appear that all the funds and all the giant creepy humanoid robots in the world cant keep Rubin happy. So the creator of Google’s all consuming operating system is set to leave after nine years bringing his mobile operating system start up to the market leader. It has been a term of ups and downs, but also vast success for the ex Danger and Apple engineer.

Moving On

rubin bye nexusWhat will Rubin do next if not working for one of the great tech companies in Silicon valley? We are sure job opportunities will come in all directions, but for the time being he will be dedicated to something dramatically smaller. Choosing instead to draw on his own vast experience and starting his own incubator for hardware startups, at least according the The Wall Street Journal.

Only last year Andy stepped down from his role in Android, leading to swirling rumours for weeks after. Many predicted the decline of Android without its creator. The seat vacated was soon filled by Sundar Pichai, proving at Google everyone is replaceable. Sure enough Rubin’s role as the head of Google’s robotics will now be filled by James Kuffner, currently working in the department and also teaching as a professor at Carnegie Mellon University.

Google’s Larry Page has been quick release a statement to publicly thank Andy for his work at Google.

“I want to wish Andy all the best with what’s next, With Android he created something truly remarkable-with a billion plus happy users. Thank you”.
