Moto G and Moto X Lollipop Updates Rolling Out Now

|

One of the recent gripes from Nexus device owners has been news that other OEMs including LG, Motorola and Sony have been pushing out Lollipop builds to their devices. Until today, those builds were variations of opt-in preview builds, much like the Nexus 5/7 (2013) Android 5 Lollipop Developer Preview. However, release notes for the Moto X Lollipop update have surfaced on Motorola’s website for the 2nd generation version of the device.

UPDATE (12/11/2014 1:05PM ET): Motorola just announced that OTA updates are rolling out in phases for the Moto X (2nd Gen), Moto G (2nd Gen) US GSM, and Moto G (2nd Gen) Global GSM retail versions that are sold in the US.

While release notes often surface in advance of official updates, these notes read as if the update is rolling out now and there is no indication that the update is coming soon or at a later date. Motorola provides two sets of instructions for the update:

For a successful installation, we recommend installing this update when the battery in your phone is at least 50% charged and you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.
If you have received a notification message for this update:

  1. Select “Yes, I’m in”.
  2. After the software is downloaded, select “Install now”.
  3. After the software is installed, your phone will re-start automatically.
  4. Your phone is now updated with 22.11.6

If you have not received a notification message for this update, follow the steps below to manually update your phone:

  1. Select the Settings icon in the apps menu.
  2. Select “About phone”.
  3. Select “System updates”.
  4. Select “Yes, I’m in”. After the software is downloaded, select “Install now”.
  5. After the software is installed, your phone will re-start automatically.
  6. Your phone is now updated to 22.11.6

While it may seem unfortunate that Nexus device owners are being left behind – Google after all touts that one of the perks of owning a Nexus devise is receiving OS updates before other devices, there’s no denying that many in the Android community are more than pleased with the quick attention this new release is getting from OEMs – typically the stumbling block in quick updates to new versions of Android.

What do you think about Motorola – and possibly other OEMs – beating Google’s Nexus devices to the official Android 5 Lollipop update? Has your Moto G (2nd Gen) or Moto X (2nd Gen) received the update already? Let us know what you think in the comments below, or on Google+, Facebook, or Twitter.
