I’m a sucker for space science and physics, although I’m not terribly good at either one which is probably why I write about them rather than work in them. NASA has released a new image of Galaxy IC 335 that’s just absolutely amazing. IC 335 is 45,000 light years long and 60-million light years away from us here on Earth. Hubble continues to amaze us with its ability to reach out so far and bring back such beauty. To give you some perspective, 1 light year is about 6 trillion miles making this IC 335 a whopping 360 trillion miles from earth! For further perspective the circumference of the earth is only 24, 901.55 miles, how’s that for mind blown?
“It clearly isn’t an elliptical galaxy since it looks flat, but it doesn’t seem to have matter between the stars…so the scientists involved classify it as an intermediate type between spirals and ellipticals,” Dr. Jay M. Pasachoff, professor of astronomy at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and co-author of The Cosmos: Astronomy in the New Millennium, told The Huffington Post in an email.
NASA says IC-335 is mainly made up of aging stars but you can’t help but wonder if there just might be civilization somewhere out there. Check out the video below for some amazing images from Hubble over the years, it’s well worth a watch.
