Apple has long distributed two different photo editing apps for its Mac users to edit their photos, iPhoto and Aperture. iPhoto has always been geared towards simplicity and the average user. Edits in iPhoto are much faster and the tools are less complex and often one click solutions. Aperture, on the other hand, was geared to those photographers who wanted more granular control of their edits much like Adobe Lightroom. Apple gave The Verge’s Dan Seifert a first look at what is replacing both iPhoto and Aperture, the new Photos app for Mac. Have a look at Dan’s hands-on below.
The combination of iPhoto and Aperture into one singular app that has been given stronger (easier to use) tools for beginners is exactly what Apple was aiming for. Aperture is a wonderful program but most serious photographers are already using Adobe’s Lightroom which is a step above Aperture. I think Apple is realizing that Adobe’s tools for professionals have been and continue to be the best paid tools on the market and are looking at the novice/entry level user instead. The new Photos app looks to be shaping up to be an excellent iPhoto replacement. It’s a better, more intuitive interface with tools that are easy to use. The integration with the iPhone will also be a plus for those who fully live in Apple’s ecosystem as well. What do you think of the new Photos app? Are you a current iPhoto or Aperture user?
