When you visit the Chicago Auto Show, what are some things you’d expect to find and learn about?  If you said carbon fiber RFID blocking wallets I’d be surprised, but that is, in fact, something that came from Media Day at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. While perusing a special edition Maserati with a significant amount of carbon fiber embellishments, I spoke with Greg, who was representing Maserati at the Auto Show, but also wanted to let me know about the line of carbon fiber wallets, and the Kickstarter they’re running that includes Viator Gear RFID blocking.  Intrigued, I asked for more information and Greg was happy to oblige.

The Kickstarter campaign for the Viator Gear RFID blocking carbon fiber wallet has already met it’s quite modest funding goal of $3,000, so you can feel comfortable in the knowledge that this Kickstarter has been successfully funded.  If you’re interested in getting a slick looking wallet with additional RFID blocking abilities, just jump to the source link below and put in your pledge.  If you need a bit more convincing, just keep reading.

Many credit cards contain RFID chips that allow them to transmit data during payment transactions.  Nefarious individuals can scan for, and obtain the data that these cards transmit through any number of normal activities.  You could be getting scanned RIGHT NOW.  Ok, probably not right now, but you can be at risk in public areas if one of the aforementioned nefarious individuals is present with RFID scanning equipment.  There are somewhat conflicting reports about how much can actually be done with the information gleaned from these scans, but it is definitely possible for the credit cards in your wallet to transmit information in ways that you might not expect.

Viator (Latin for “traveller”) Gear created an RFID blocking lining that is used by the military to block prying eyes from private conversations.  Their lining is by the White House to safeguard transmissions, and it works.  Viator has partnered with Carbon Era Designs to add this lining into a styling line of carbon fiber wallets.  Available in this Kickstarter are:

Viator carbon fiber RFID half wallet

The half-wallet.  For the minimalist, this half-wallet includes a bill pocket, and several card slots.

Viator carbon fiber RFID wallet

The standard bi-fold wallet has several additional card slots, and a bi-fold design for cash and other items.

Viator carbon fiber RFID passport wallet

The passport wallet has a large side pocket to hold your passport book, several card holders, and a large pocket for cash and other items.

Carbon fiber is light, strong, and really just looks cool.  The combination of looks and features make this an attractive option for anyone worried about card skimming or, just because I want to be able to say this again, nefarious individuals looking to steal your personal information.

There are still 12 days to get in on this already-funded Kickstarter.  The lowest price of entry for a half-wallet is $40, the bi-fold wallet is $50, and the passport wallet is $60.  There are options for multiple wallets, or even one of each at a discount.  Hit up the source link below for more information or to sign up for the Kickstarter.
