Icon Q Launches $199 Q5.5 Octa Core Smartphone

On one end of the spectrum sit the $800-plus flagship devices from Motorola, Samsung, Apple, Sony, and others. On the other end, you have $150 budget phone alternatives which, while cheaper, may not always give you the best bang for your dollar. Enter Icon Q, a company who primarily makes wireless devices like headphones, speakers, and Qi charging bases. Earlier today, Icon Q announced the launch of their first smartphone – the Q5.5.

Icon Q decided to enter the smartphone arena after noticing a shift in the industry and felt it was time to offer a device with great features at a great price and provide alternatives to Apple, Samsung, and other high priced devices. By offering an unlocked device it’s easy to switch out for a local SIM card when travelling out of the country and saving users money by using local data plans which are often at a much better price – and offer much more data – than roaming plans provided by big telecommunications carriers.

So just what do you get for $199? For starters, the Q5.5 is unlocked and features a 5.5″ 1280x720p screen, 16GB storage, 2GB RAM, a microSD slot, dual SIM card slots, 13MP back camera, 5MP front camera, 2100 mAh battery, and works on any carrier that supports GSM (sorry Verizon and Sprint users). The smartphone is powered by a Mediatek Octa Core MTK6592M (1.4 Ghz) processor and runs Android 4.4 (KitKat). It also has 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 support.

Take a look at the Q5.5 overview in the Icon Q video below.

While it doesn’t have the fastest processor or highest resolution screen, if it does everything you need a smartphone to do then the price definitely sounds right. The Q5.5 is available for purchase for $199USD.
