HOW TO: Enable New Experimental Transparent YouTube Interface In Chrome

|
,

A few weeks ago, we were teased a peak at a slick new YouTube interface that did away with the solid bars for a transparent look instead. Unfortunately, it seems to be in testing mode and there isn’t any word on when it will be rolling out to the masses.

YouTube user Saurav Sinha has been kind enough to post a method to see the new interface. The steps are quite simple:

  1. Sign out of your YouTube account.
  2. Download EditThisCookie Chrome extension
  3. Visit YouTube and sign in
  4. Click the EditThisCookie icon and change the value of VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE to Q06SngRDTGA

This process worked fine for me without signing out, but others have had issues with it working so your success may vary.

So what is new with the new interface? Besides the transparent overlay, there are also quite a few new transition effects including a morphing animation when you press the play/pause, volume/mute, and settings icons. There is also a transition between the speed, subtitles, and quality settings from the default settings menu into each sub-menu. One tip, you’ll need to be full screen in order to access the share and watch later features which will appear in the upper right hand corner.

As can be seen in the screenshot above, the experimental YouTube interface features a transparent bar.

The new interface definitely looks and feels pretty slick, hopefully it will roll out to everyone in the near future, in the meantime follow the steps above or in the tutorial video by Saurav Sinha below. Let us know if it worked for you and what you think of the new interface in the comments below, or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
