Kickstarter: Eliminate Distractions With Light Phone

Light Phone is a Kickstarter project which is being touted as the anti-smartphone.  It is a cellphone that is just a phone.  No text messaging, no apps, no distractions – just calls.  As their campaign states, “calls forward, distractions don’t.”  The idea behind it is to be able to leave your smartphone at home when you want minimal distractions when going out.  You would forward your number to the Light Phone so anyone who calls your normal phone will reach you.

The design of the light phone is very simple.  The phone itself is about the size of a credit card and is only 4mm thick.  It will use a mini SIM card so you will be able to swap that out with the SIM card in your phone if you’d rather not forward your number to it.  With an adapter you will be able to put a micro or nano SIM card in it as well.  The forwarding should be easy as well as the duo behind it are working on an app for your smartphone that will make forwarding your number an ease and will also populate the caller ID on the Light Phone if the person calling is in your contacts.

Light Phone

Since the Light Phone is just a phone using 10 year old technology it makes for a very impressive battery life.  The standby time on a full charge is expected to be about 20 days, eliminating the need to  worry about charging it if you go out on a camping trip and want to be able to have a phone with you in case of an emergency.  You can also store up to 10 numbers for speed dial so you don’t have to remember the numbers of the people you would want to contact the most.

The price of the Light Phone is set at only $100 and includes a SIM card that is preloaded with 500 minutes of talk time if you’re in the United States.  If you’re outside of the US the phone will still work but you will need to get your own SIM on your own network.  The Light Phone does work on any GSM network so there shouldn’t be any issues using it internationally.  With their Light Phone app you will also be able to reload the SIM card with more prepaid minutes once the initial 500 are used up.

I can think of some great uses for the Light Phone from going on camping trips, out for a date, a random drive around exploring, or a great first phone for a kid.  At $100 it is cheap enough that I might pick one up just so I can have those times that I can go out and not be distracted by messages, checking social media, or trying to stay up on what is happening in the world by looking at news articles.
