iPhone Messages App Crashes Phone When Opening Malicious Text

So contrary to popular belief (egged on and amplified by people who like to watch others argue over phones) the iPhone isn’t bulletproof from bugs. It has a nice long history of having its issues from hardware to software. Now the latest bug has hit the iPhone Messages app and it’s a bit of a pain in the butt.

Someone has figured out that a string of text characters can and will crash your iPhone when they open said message. The good thing is the text has to be sent from another iPhone for it to work, that should curb “other OS” users from sending texts to iPhone users they may not like. It seems people are sending the text to friends as a prank or to see if it actually works, it does so just don’t do it.

In the meantime, several workarounds are possible. You can have the person who sent you the malicious message send another message effectively canceling out the initial strand. Another option is to send yourself a message via Siri, the share sheet, or from your Mac.

You can find examples of the issue over on Twitter if you’re super curious but I am certain Apple will have a patch coming soon. Apple generally does a good job of fixing these types of bugs.
