Are Google+ Notifications About To Change?

|

Google appears to be making some tweaks to the top bar in its products as Google+ adopts a new role in the company’s portfolio. Many people have noticed in the past few days that the “+Person” link at the top of most Google pages has lost the + and the link, with Google+ being moved into the apps drop down, although this doesn’t yet appear to have propagated to those using Google Apps.

Another change which we spotted here at Techaeris is that the Google+ notifications dropdown is now labelled as Google notifications. In addition, each notification has an icon next to it. In my notifications, there were icons for Google+ and Communities, while our editor Jason Bouwmeester also noticed notifications for Google+’s new Collections feature.

With the header being changed to Google notifications, it seems increasingly likely that Google is rethinking what the notifications area is for. Imagine if this area could inform you of upcoming calendar appointments, reminders and so on. It could also become an area, at least on the desktop, where Google Now information could appear.

Obviously, these could just be cosmetic changes and any change of use at this point is purely speculation, but given that Google is rethinking its approach to Google+, already having split Google Photos from it, it seems likely that changes to notifications could be part of this shift.

What would you like to see in a revamped Google notifications? Let us know in the comments below or through Google+ (obviously!), Twitter or Facebook.
