David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, wants free porn sites to put tighter age restrictions on their content so that under 18 users can’t access it. The websites in question are being given time to install age restriction measures that work and if they don’t comply they could be shut down.
“I want to see age restrictions put into place or these websites will face being shut down,” Cameron said in a statement.
The porn sites will be given other options to ban users that are not of age, as well as put the restriction software in place. If they can’t figure it out the UK government is proposing to introduce legislation that would make it a crime in the UK to publish online pornography without age verification controls. The government has plans on meeting with the porn site owners to help them figure out the best way to regulate the videos.
In the UK, the top 10 porn sites represent 52 per cent of views, according to Government figures. It said that all of those popular sites give away free content and don’t have “robust age verification.”
“Whilst great progress has been made, we remain acutely aware of the risks and dangers that young people face online,” said Joanna Shields, the minister for internet safety and security. This is why we are committed to taking action to protect children from harmful content. Companies delivering adult content in the UK must take steps to make sure these sites are behind age verification controls.
Cameron’s goals are lofty and the requirements he’s placing on these sites will be a difficult one to comply with. Tech savvy kids these days are pretty good at circumventing age restriction software and measures. We will see how this works out for the UK and if some of these sites end up getting shuttered.
