Human Waste To Water & Electricity: Gates Foundation’s Omni Processor Update

|

Back in January a video surfaced from something that the Gates Foundation — run by Bill and Melinda Gates — which showed a machine that processed human waste into clean drinking water and energy. The video even showed Bill Gates drinking a glass of water that was processed from the machine (his review: it was great).

After testing the machine, the Janicki Omni Processor (JOP) has been brought to Dakar, Senegal for testing in a real world situation. Taking human waste, the machine processes it into drinking water, electricity, and ash. While potable water and electricity are great benefits, the primary goal of JOP is to increase sanitation for cities in poorer countries.

According to Gates, the tests are going well and JOP is working as intended. Part of the ongoing research is focused on making the processor even smaller and cheaper to produce, likely increasing the chances of it being deployed in more cities and neighbourhoods around the world that really need it. Janicki Bioenergy is already working on a successor to JOP, a new Omni Processor that will not only burn and convert human waste, but all types of garbage as well.
