A Rumored Xiaomi Laptop Might Actually Be Really Nice

|

Xiaomi is like the Samsung of China, sticking their hands into every consumer electronic they possibly can. From smartphones and routers to water purifiers and fitness trackers the company is on the fast-track for growth. The latest rumor coming out of India could see next year bring us a Xiaomi laptop. That’s the speculation swirling around the company at the moment and it’s not that much of a stretch to imagine.

Xiaomi already makes solid smartphone hardware running a heavily modified Android OS called MIUI. They have a former Google executive (Hugo Barra) in a key management position who could very well be thinking a Xiaomi laptop is brilliant, but what kind of laptop? My guess, if this was to happen, is you’d be seeing a Chromebook with ChromeOS being modified to fit the MIUI style. Windows would seem the common sense choice but that would drive the price up and I think Xiaomi would want to stick in the affordable range.

Using Chrome OS to keep software costs down would allow them to concentrate on design and build. Xiaomi is well known for their solid builds and also for their design, which is nearly torn out of the Apple playbook. I almost see a Xiaomi laptop looking like the new MacBook and I wouldn’t put it past them to integrate a “Force Touch” type trackpad into it. It will be interesting for sure to see what happens. It will also be interesting to see if they end up copying Apple design and how that will affect US sales if it’s even planned for a US release.
