Google Fortunetelling Uses Guilt As A Call To Action

Editorial / Tech

There’s no shortage of people in the world who believe the world isn’t doing enough to support a cause they believe is the most important cause there could be. With the amount of atrocities out there it’s easy to get lost in the noise of chaos and pain, your eyes and ears get numb after every news report. Google Fortunetelling is a new website setup at the URL, and it’s made to look like Google’s homepage. The idea behind Google Fortunetelling is to bring attention to the refugee crisis that has pretty much been reported 24/7 through every news outlet on the planet. The “brilliant” thinking here though… let’s guilt people into giving to this cause because they are just not doing anything but sitting on their fat butts thinking about themselves. Under the guise of answering a question about your future (once you type in your question and hit enter), the creators quickly send you to a page that basically says to quit being so self-centered. It partially says this:

So we used a fake Google-site to get your attention because apparently you were interested in your own future.

A pretty lofty accusation, and an interesting way to drum up support for a cause that’s seriously getting a lot of support already. Google itself has donated money to the cause and is matching donations through its donation app. Apple has donated money as well and is also matching twice the amount of any donations made by its employees. With the amount of need in the world perhaps the creators of this website hadn’t thought that maybe, just maybe, people are donating to other causes that are just as important? Perhaps someone visiting this website who thought it just might be legit is one of those causes? What if someone typed in. How do I kill myself with a gun? Then this accusatory splash page appears with its chin up and looking down its nose at you. Could this site do more harm than good? There are better ways to get people to help and donate to a cause. Guilting them is one of the least effective ways. /rant

If you want to donate to the refugees please visit Google’s REAL donation site here. If you don’t want to or can’t or are already supporting other causes, that’s awesome!
