While it was rumoured that the Gears of War franchise was headed to the Xbox One Backward Compatibility program on November 12th, The Coalition has confirmed via Twitter that this is indeed the case. In addition, those who purchase and play the Gears of War Ultimate Edition will receive tokens to redeem for digital copies of the Xbox 360 versions of Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War Judgment.

Following up their tweet with a blog post, The Coalition also mentioned that anyone who plays Gears of War Ultimate Edition before December 31, 2015 – both Silver and Gold Xbox Live members – will also receive codes for the Xbox 360 versions of the four games.
We are honored to confirm not only will the entire series of Gears of War games for Xbox 360 come to the Backward Compatibility program when it becomes generally available, but that we’ll also be giving tokens for the collection to everyone who plays Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Live between August 25 and Dec 31st 2015.
The tokens will be fulfilled in waves, so if you don’t get yours right away you might need to be patient and wait a few days. If you already own physical or digital version of the Xbox 360 versions, you’ll be able play when Backward Compatibility launches on November 12th with the New Xbox One Experience. Simply insert your Xbox 360 disc into your Xbox One and the game will be downloaded and installed to your Xbox One, once installed you can play but you’ll still need to insert your Xbox 360 game disc every time you want to play.
The post also mentions that all game modes, including Multiplayer, will work just as they do on Xbox 360. Additionally, you can play with people who are either playing Gears of War via backwards compatibility on Xbox One, or on Xbox 360.
Now, who’s got a copy of Gears of War Ultimate Edition they can lend me so I don’t have to insert my Xbox 360 discs whenever I want to play? Are you excited to be able to revisit the Gears of War franchise on your Xbox One? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
