Though the Internet briefly lost its collective mind over initial reports, the rumors was laid to rest when it was revealed that Mariah Carey would be providing the voice of the Mayor of Gotham in the upcoming film The Lego Batman Movie. Carey joins an already impressive cast that includes the voice of Batman in the 2014 smash hit The Lego Movie Will Arnett.
Earlier in the day, multiple entertainment news outlets reported that the multi-platinum pop diva would be playing Commissioner Gordon in this spin-off from The Lego Movie. As one would expect, the rumor was met by confusion and slight outrage from the usually completely rational twittersphere.
Unlike Starbucks’ red cups, this outrage was short lived, as it was confirmed that Carey had indeed been cast in The Lego Batman Movie, but as Gotham’s Mayor, not Commissioner Gordon. The Internet must have breathed a sigh of relief that the former Mrs. Cannon would not occupy Gordon’s role, which will likely go to an actor of the struggling white male demographic.
Carey joins an already impressive cast comprised of Arnett as Batman, Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth and Zach Galifianakis as the Joker. The addition of the Grammy Award winning artist adds even more name recognition to an already star-studded ensemble.
Following the massive success of The Lego Movie, the studios decided to spawn its own expanded universe including a sequel and multiple spin-offs. One of the spin-offs being for the brooding vigilante whose appearance in the original film was a bright spot in an already bright film.
The Lego Batman Movie is set to be released February 10, 2017.
