Star Wars: The Force Awakens Breaks Loads Of Opening Weekend Box Office Records

Entertainment / Movies

So it seems obvious to me now that I wasn’t the only person to go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens this weekend. In fact, as numbers continue to come pouring in, Box Office records continue to fall as Star Wars powers on. I personally saw the movie twice this weekend (and enjoyed it thoroughly, as you can see in our completely spoiler-free review), and I know that’s honestly a low number for some Star Wars viewers. I have some friends that saw the movie five (5!) times on Friday alone.  That’ll help boost box office numbers for sure. So what kind of numbers are we talking about here?

Disney has released some numbers showing that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has smashed the domestic opening weekend box office record, taking in an estimated $238 Million. This squashes the previous record, set only a few months ago by Jurassic World, of $208 Million. Adding an additional $279 Million International Box Office take, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens has brought in a cool $517 Million globally.

From Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios.

Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves. To all of the fans around the world who not only came out in Force to make this such an exciting and astronomical debut but who treated this film as their own and helped preserve the experience for their fellow fans by not spoiling it – thank you, we do.

Just for good measure, here are a few other domestic Box Office records that were broken this weekend:

  • Biggest Thursday preview gross with $57M
  • Biggest Friday and biggest single-day gross with $120.5M
  • First film ever to post a single day over $100M
  • Fastest film to $100M and $200M
  • Biggest December debut (nearly 3 times previous record of $84.6M)
  • Biggest IMAX Thursday night preview ($5.7M), single-day ($14M, Friday), and weekend ($30.1M)
  • Highest theater average for a wide release ($57,568)
