Seidio LUMA Review: Colorize iPhone Flash Notifications

|
,

Cases come and cases go, especially iPhone cases. I am currently writing this review with literally sixteen different iPhone cases sitting next to me including the Seidio LUMA which was sent to me awhile back but I’m finally getting to writing about it just now. Sometimes as a reviewer the products can get backlogged but eventually we get there. This is the Seidio LUMA review, for you flash notification junkies this is going to be like crack.

Design

There’s not much to say about the design of the LUMA as it takes on the looks of the iPhone itself. The case is clear as a bell and the iPhone is visible from all sides. Minimal design and minimal branding make it an ideal case for someone who wants to just show off the iPhone. The material is a glossy plastic but the edges have a more rubbery feel giving the case a good grip so it doesn’t feel like it will slip out of the hand. The only non clear part is the camera and flash cover which is a silver color. The flash has a cover which allows the light to channel around the edges of the case creating that flashing effect along the bumper, check out the Tweet below to see that in action.

The LUMA comes with a couple different color screens you can put on the camera cover (green, red, yellow and blue) to customize the color of your notifications. If you don’t know, the iPhone has a setting to allow your flash to go off when you get notifications and that’s what this case is working off of. When you want to use your flash as a flash, just slip the cover open and use the camera as intended. Otherwise you slip the cover over the flash and the whole case lights up when you get notifications.

It’s probably a flash notification user’s wet dream but be careful using this thing in a theater, I completely forgot that I had flash notifications going and it went off while watching a movie. Needless to say, a few of my neighbors weren’t so thrilled with the brightness of the LUMA.

Installation

Straight forward slip and snap install, if you’ve put cases on your phone before this is not hard. The LUMA does come with a screw driver though, to install the filter covers on the flash cover. Pretty straight forward with instructions included, it shouldn’t pose any issue to anyone aged 7-90.

Protection

While some might see this case as a gimmick and I do admit that this isn’t for everyone, it does offer up some great protection. It pads the phone very well and offers great corner drop protection along with a raised lip for front screen protection. So this isn’t just about the pretty lights, it really does protect your phone as well.

Price/Value

Priced at $29.95 it’s fairly priced along the same lines as anything else in this protection range. It’s worth the price.

Wrap Up

If you like to use your flash for notifications this IS the case for you, its customizable colors are pretty cool (albeit annoying to some) and the protection offered is on par with other cases of this price.
