This is how we did email and internet shopping in 1984

|

1984, the year the Apple Macintosh came into being, the year Atari announced the Atari 7800 (then shelved it until 1986) and the year of Ghostbusters, Gremlins and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. 1984 was an awesome year filled with some awesome innovations and creations, it was also one of the years where new technology was allowing people to email, pay bills online and shop on the relatively new “Internet.” Some of you reading this piece are going to laugh but the videos below were bleeding edge tech back in 1984 and as complicated as it seems now, it was pretty damn slick! Check out how we were sending emails in 1984.

Paying bills and Internet shopping was also being done in 1984 although in a much uglier user interface than we have today. I can’t imagine the security nightmares we’d see today if we were still using the method demonstrated in the video below.

It’s interesting to see how technology has grown over the past twenty years and how the Internet has expanded and matured. I can only imagine what we’re going to think in 2036 when we look back at the technology we’re using today.

What do you think of the email services of 1984? How about Internet shopping? If you were using these systems back in those days, feel free to leave a comment below and share your experiences. If you weren’t around in 1984 feel free to let us know what you think of the technology being used back in those days.
