BlackBerry Priv Marshmallow Update Could Happen If You Help Beta Test

A BlackBerry Priv Marshmallow update could happen in the very near future for you if you are willing to help BlackBerry beta test the software. The BlackBerry Priv was the device BlackBerry was hoping might save them a spot in the mobile market, but it has had weak sales. The company has only sold 600,000 units in the last fourth fiscal quarter missing it’s expectation of 850,000 units. Part of the issue for BlackBerry is the lack of Android 6.0 on their “premium” device which has kept many buyers away. Now the company is reaching out to it’s Priv users for help to bring Android 6.0 to the device.

Almost immediately after we confirmed our newest phone, PRIV by BlackBerry, would be powered by a unique, security-amplified version of Android 5.1 Lollipop, people started asking when we’d update PRIV to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Because Marshmallow and PRIV were announced within a week of one another, and because we’ve been more aggressive in rolling out updates than most Android device makers, the appeals for Marshmallow from Android and BlackBerry fans have only gotten stronger.

If you’re one of the people who wants to see Marshmallow on your PRIV, we have great news. We’re kicking off the first beta program of the Android OS in BlackBerry Beta Zone. Starting today, we’re inviting PRIV owners to sign up now to participate in our Beta Zone program and contribute to testing Android 6.0 on PRIV.

The Priv had mixed reviews with most bloggers either really enjoying the device or really hating the device. Overall the device looks and feels like a premium handset but BlackBerry’s challenge will be to keep the software as current as it can without too much lag time between updates. One thing is for certain, BlackBerry isn’t ready to give up on the Priv just yet.
