Hot on the heels of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens availability on Blu-Ray, Disney had another surprise in store for Star Wars fans this morning. The first official teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released, and oh boy is it fantastic. Take a look at the trailer below, and then stick around for some discussion and mild geeking out.
OK! First off, we get some opening shots of our protagonist, and just to make our lives easier, we learn her name almost immediately. Jyn Erso seems to be a bit of a troublemaker, with a rap sheet that includes forgery, possession of stolen property, assault, resisting arrest. This leads us to what is possibly my favorite line in the teaser, when Jyn responds to accusations that she is reckless and aggressive by saying “This is a rebellion isn’t it? I rebel.”
Satisfied with her answer, we move to hearing about Jyn’s first mission, and it sounds awfully familiar if you’ve seen any of the original movies. Stop me if you’ve heard this one, but it seems that there’s some kind of super weapon that the Empire is building. Since this is a prequel story though, we actually get to SEE the Death Star being built. We see a shot of the giant composite beam superlaser dish getting installed onto the Death Star (I’m assuming Death Star I at this point since no mention was made of any Bothans assisting on the mission).
A short time later, some sort of alarm starts going off, and it’s honestly about the only bad part of this teaser. It’s just an especially obnoxious sounding alarm. This alarm does lead to us seeing Forest Whitaker in some pretty impressive armor though. Whitaker seems like he may be filling a sort of mentor role for Jyn. Could he be a Jedi? Unknown at this point, we’ll just have to wait and see. Whitaker pontificates for a bit, we see some running some fighting, some shooting, and then OMG AT-AT Walkers! Woo!
The trailer closes with Whitaker’s voiceover asking: “If you continue to fight, what will you become?” The final shot shows us Jyn standing wearing a suit of black Imperial armor. Freaking awesome. December cannot come soon enough.
