Google Announces Custom Live Cases For Nexus Devices

There is no shortage of cases for the latest Nexus phones. In fact, we’ve looked at some ourselves. There are a bunch of accessories manufacturers designing cases for the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X and Google itself has some official cases on Google Store. Now, Google is adding one more case to that line up and this one is more interesting.

Google is calling this one the Live Case for Nexus devices. And it’s not any old case. Google is letting you customise this case with either a photograph or a place and some of the styles available. There’s more. Along with the case, Google is also giving you a matching live wallpaper. If you selected a photograph, you’re given the option to set up a photo gallery, whereas if you opted for the place, you get a stylised map of your current location.

The case also includes an NFC button on the back, which you can program to launch your favourite app quickly. This should be really handy, but it’s not exactly a new feature. There have been some cases which have a button which does the same thing, and some companies have added a programmable button to the device itself, notably Blackberry on its older devices.

The case is available for the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X for $35. You can customise the case on its page on the Google Store. Google has experimented with live cases in the past, when they teamed up with Skrillex and offered cases for a variety of Android devices. This was nearly a year ago and wasn’t as customisable as the Custom Live Case, though it did have a programmable button on the back.
