Doctor Who Names Pearl Mackie As New Companion

We left Doctor Who companion-less at the end of season 9 as Jenna Coleman, who played Clara Oswald, left the series. Yesterday BBC One announced the Doctor’s new companion during the halftime of the FA Cup semi-final match between Everton and Manchester United. Here’s the video.

Pearl Mackie will be playing Bill, who she describes as being “cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in.” Clearly from the clip we can see she’s already got a great sense of humor and can push Twelve’s buttons relatively well. Bill is sure to keep a light touch in the Whoverse. Mackie is rather excited, as one naturally would be, to be Twelve’s second companion.

I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It’s such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn’t be prouder to call the Tardis my home. Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space.

Unfortunately we still have quite a bit of a wait to see Twelve and his new companion, with the next Doctor Who episode scheduled to be the 2016 Christmas special, airing on Christmas day. Season 10 will wait until 2017 to be aired due to “national moments including the Euros and Olympics” according to BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore.

Season 10 will also end the six year stint of showrunner Steven Moffat as he’s already announced his exit and his replacement – Chris Chibnall. Whether or not Peter Capaldi will stay on past season 10 is in the air, Chibnall was reportedly given the option to search for his own Doctor but eventually Capaldi was asked to stay on past Moffat’s exit, according to RadioTimes.

I’ve been asked to stay on, but it’s such a long time before I have to make that decision. Steven’s been absolutely wonderful, so I love working with him. Chris is fantastic, and I think he’s a hugely talented guy. I don’t know where the show’s gonna go then. I don’t know. I have to make up my mind, and I haven’t yet. As Steven will tell you, it’s very difficult to say goodbye.

Do you want to see Capaldi stay as the Twelfth Doctor? How do you feel about Bill as the new companion? Hit us up in the comments!
