Destiny: Rise of Iron Expansion Coming In September

Players of Destiny will have new content to play in September as Bungie announced the game’s newest expansion, Rise of Iron. With Oryx slain and his Taken army in disarray, your guardian’s attention turns toward Old Russia where you will take on plagued Fallen.

The expansion will feature a new playable cinematic story campaign set within the Plaguelands, a brand new location set on planet Earth. You’ll join Lord Saladin in taking on a brand new faction of Fallen Devils. The Splicers — as they’re called — will plague you throughout the story campaign as you try to unravel the mystery that is the Iron Lords. Of course, the story isn’t the only new aspect of the expansion.

Players will also be able to play a new three-player strike and there will be a new six-play co-op raid. The crucible will also be receiving new maps and a new mode, though what that is has yet to be mentioned. Throughout the expansion, you’ll be privy to new armor and weapons, along with other gear. There will be a new social area to hang out in, and there will be an increase in the maximum in-game Light Level. Although, there isn’t a set number for what that is exactly. You’ll also be able to to wield a flaming war axe, though that’ll be encounter specific so don’t expect to be running around with it all the time.

While that’s all well and good, there are two important caveats to take away from today’s announcement. The first caveat is that for the first time, the expansion will only be for current generation consoles. That’s right, while every other expansion has come out for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, this one will only be for the latter two.

The second caveat is that one of Destiny‘s most coveted year one weapons Gjallarhorn is coming back. For those who don’t know, the rocket launcher was considered overpowered and Bungie decided not to bring a year two version of the weapon as it limited group compositions to those with the weapon. However, with Rise of Iron, the rocket launcher will be back. Bungie will be taking a different route in this expansion and will give it to players as a quest reward, and those who pre-order the game will receive a black version of the weapon as a bonus.

Check out the official release trailer below. In it you’ll get a glimpse of the new areas, as well as the new faction and Lord Saladin wielding the flaming war axe. It’s worth the under two minutes it takes to watch. Enjoy.

Destiny: Rise of Iron drops Sept. 20, and you will be able to preorder the game in each console’s respective online stores soon. Will you be picking up a copy? Let us know on social media or in the comments below.
