It’s been fairly easy over the past few years for one to get lost in the major superhero blockbuster movies and all but miss other offerings in theaters. Even though the superhero and action guy flicks are mopping up at the box office, we should consider movies with a bit more structure and story, more complexity and depth…like Anthropoid.
I’m a sucker for “period” films based on true stories and Anthropoid is exactly that. Starring Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan and Harry Lloyd the film revolves around a WWII mission codenamed Anthropoid. The story is about the mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution and the Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler.
Directed by English director Sean Ellis (The Broken, The Proposal, Cashback, CityLights) this certainly looks like a nicely shot film. “Period” films aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but at least Ellis is attempting to break up the monotony in theaters. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some superhero movies, I mean who doesn’t love Deadpool? But having something based on reality is a nice change of pace and Anthropoid looks like it could be worth seeing in theaters.
I was drawn to this particular film because of Cillian Murphy who’s done some great work in Batman Begins, Transcendence, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception and 28 Days Later among others. Looking forward to seeing how his performance stands up in Anthropoid.
