Linksys Announces Three New DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modems

Linksys has announced three new DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modems, marking a return to the cable modem market after over 10 years. The new lineup will give consumers another opportunity to buy a cable modem outright and skip the monthly rental fees charged by most Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

“Consumers can save up to $120 a year if they purchase their own cable modem instead of paying monthly rental fees,” said Brian Nickell, cable modem product manager at Linksys. “With rental fees being on average $10 a month, consumers can have our CM3008 paid off in as little as six months and have the latest high performance modem that matches the broadband plan they have subscribed to.”

An IDC research paper sponsored by Linksys found that more than 50% of subscribers don’t know their internet service package or what cable modem they have. Many cable internet subscribers are still using the original cable modem they received from their ISP when they signed up, and with constant service upgrades their existing modem may no longer be the right hardware for their existing services.

The CM30016 is a 16X4 DOCSIS 3.0 certified cable modem and will be available later this summer. The CM3008 is ideal for subscribers that purchase cable broadband plans up to 100 Mbps, the CM3016 is for subscriptions up to 250Mpbs and the CM3024 is for subscriptions over 250Mbps.
