Could the era of a more reasonable priced flagship smartphone finally be creeping up on us? ZTE announced the Axon 7 with amazing specs priced at $399USD, which competes with OnePlus’s OnePlus 3 with very similar specs. Now Alcatel is putting up their Alcatel Idol 4s up for pre-order at the affordable price of $349USD and that includes a VR headset. The Alcatel Idol 4s looks slick with its all metal and glass build and front facing speakers. The front panel is wrapped in Gorilla Glass and it is a 5.5-inch 2,560 1,440 AMOLED display. It’s running an octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor 1.8(GHz), which is no slouch against the higher end Snapdragon 820 in the Axon 7 and OnePlus 3. Take a look at some quick comparisons of the two processors below.
The Alcatel Idol 4s comes with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and the microSD slot is supposed to support up to 200GB extra. The rear camera is a 16MP sensor which can shoot 4K and 360 degree video and something called “micro-video” which are compared to Snapchat videos. Of course the front facing camera is 8MP because you know… selfies!
You’ll also get a fingerprint scanner and NFC support, as well as all your important LTE bands along with VoLTE. The Alcatel Idol 4s will ship with Android 6.0 and Alcatel says it is “committed” to keeping the Idol 4s updated in the future. Not only do you get the phone and VR headset but you’ll also get some JBL headphones, Incipio case, screen protector and Quick Charge wall adapter.
The one kicker that may keep hardcore Android fans away is the inclusion of Alcatel’s own VR store, VR apps, and VR launcher which some may consider bloatware. We’re not sure if these pre-installed apps can be removed or not. The Alcatel Idol 4s goes up for pre-order tomorrow for $349 and pre-orders end Aug 3rd at which point the price will go up to $399. It may be worth saving $50 if you really want this device.
