T-Mobile offers free data for Pokémon GO players

We’ve seen John Legere and T-Mobile make some pretty crazy offers in the past. What other company would offer its customers a share of its own stock? Uncarrier moves such as Binge On and Music Freedom may get some side-eye glances from some, but they are both clearly very popular. You know what else is very popular? Pokémon GO… What do you get when you add one very popular thing to another very popular thing? Free LTE data on the T-Mobile network for Pokémon GO.

In a news release today, T-Mobile announced that next week’s T-Mobile Tuesday rewards will lean heavily towards Pokémon GO types of rewards. You’ll still have your free Lyft ride and free Wendy’s Frosty, but their description for next week’s Thanks are explained in how they’ll help your Pokémon hunting:

  • Free, unlimited data on Pokémon Go, so it won’t touch your high-speed data — for a full year!
  • Free Lyft rides up to $15 to get to a new PokéStop or Gym
  • Free Wendy’s Frosty to fuel up for your hunting trip
  • 50% off select accessories – including portable power packs and chargers at T-Mobile stores – so you can keep on playing for hours

I’ve seen some Pokémon players who have really been punishing their data usage since the game launched. Some have mentioned hitting nearly half of their allotment of data within the week that the game has been released. If those players are on T-Mobile, they won’t have to worry about using their LTE data when catching their next Pikachu or Oddish (does anybody really want an Oddish though?).

If those perks weren’t enough, 250 people will win $100 worth of PokéCoins, and five lucky grand prize winners will win a Pokémon GO “hunting trip” anywhere in the United States for themselves and a guest.

Are you on T-Mobile? Have you been trying to catch ’em all while worrying about your data? What do you think about the company offering up free unlimited data for Pokémon GO players? Tell us in the comment section below, or on Google+, Facebook, or Twitter.
