Overwatch fans find more clues about Sombra, Blizzard remains tight-lipped

A few weeks back, Blizzard announced that they would officially announce a new character for the Overwatch lineup at the San Diego Comic Con. Well, the announcement ended up coming a little bit early, and Ana Amari was added to the fold. Not that the healing sniper wasn’t a welcome addition to the roster, but some fans were expecting something a little bit different. Fans of the game have been finding clues pointing to a new hero named Sombra — Spanish for shadow — throughout the game and other released material from Blizzard. A new clue popped up recently in a somewhat unexpected place.

After Ana Amari was announced, fans were treated to a developer update introducing the new character. At the end of that update video, the screen went black, a beeping noise sounded, and then there was a very brief flash of what appeared to be static at first viewing. Intrepid fans of the game weren’t convinced, and immediately went to work looking for clues. The steps that ultimately lead to their discovery were a bit nutty, but in the end it was worth it.

They found that, if they cut out the vertical barcodes, ran them through a barcode reader, converted the resulting hexadecimal numbers into binary and represented the binary as black and white pixels, the clue could be converted into a QR code.

Easy as pie, right? The resulting QR code brings up the following Spanish text:

“¿Estuvo eso facilito? Ahora que tengo su atención, déjenme se las pongo más difícil.”

“Was that easy? Now that I have your attention, let’s make things more difficult.”

Kotaku spoke with Overwatch‘s game director Jeff Kaplan, who said that they’ve been teasing Sombra in various ways for quite some time. From newspaper headlines on the Dorado map, to Reaper straight up saying “Where’s Sombra when you need her?,” Blizzard seems pretty intent on drawing out the intrigue for a bit longer. Kaplan first told Kotaku on Monday:

Sombra will let people know when she wants more to be known about her. She’s very good at that sort of thing.

After Kotaku followed up today, a Blizzard representative said:

She’s continuing to leave clues for us.

We’ll see how long it takes for players to uncover any remaining clues as to the identity or whereabouts of Sombra. It will be interesting to see whether or not fans find all of the clues before the character is released, or if Blizzard will spill the beans at some point.
