Google adds spam protection to Nexus and Android One devices

In this day and age when smartphones are used more for apps and gaming and less for phone calls, it seems like more of the calls you get are unwelcome sales spam. Google is aiming to fix that and has announced that they’re adding spam protection to the Google phone app on Nexus and Android One devices. All you need to do is enable Caller ID and spam protection will be available once your phone app updates to the latest version.

Google will now notify you of a suspected spam caller.

Caller ID and spam protection is enabled by default, and you can turn it off (or back on) by opening the Phone app, tapping on more options (the three dot menu), tapping Caller ID & spam protection, and toggling the switch. When enabled, if you get a call with “Suspected spam caller” or “Spam” as the caller ID, you can answer the call or block and report the number. You can also mark other calls as spam by going into the Phone app and opening recent calls. Simply tap the call you want to report as spam, tap “Block/report spam” and you’ll have the option to block the number and report it as spam. If you’ve accidentally marked a call as spam, you can also go into the recent calls menu of the Phone app and mark it as “Not spam” using the same process.
