BlackBerry is slowly creeping its way into the Android ecosystem one step at a time. The BlackBerry Priv was their high-end offering last year and it met with mixed reactions. Last month they introduced the BlackBerry DTEK50, an affordable Android smartphone that might meet with a better reception. Now the company is making their BlackBerry Hub+ services available to Android Marshmallow devices through the Play Store. BlackBerry Hub+ brings passwords, BBM’s, social networks, email, texts, and calendar invites into one app streamlining the experience for the user.
There is one caveat to using BlackBerry Hub+ and that is, it will cost you. The first month is free but after that month is up you will have to endure advertisements. If you want to do away with ads you can subscribe to the service for 99 cents a month.
The easiest way to try out BlackBerry Hub+ is to go to the Google Play Store on your smartphone and search for BlackBerry Hub+, and then download the BlackBerry Hub+ Services app onto your phone. Then click the Hub+ Services app icon on your home screen and tap “Apps by BlackBerry” to install the entire suite of applications or select a few of your favorites. It may take some time for the trial app to show up on Google Play today; hold tight, as you should be able to see and download it within a few hours.
Some might say this move shows that BlackBerry is preparing to move completely to Android for the foreseeable future and it may come to that in order to survive. Many users love BlackBerry hardware but have always thought the apps and software were lacking. We shall see what happens from here.
