School buses being outfitted with cameras to catch drivers not stopping

Let’s just get down to the fact of the matter: stopping for a school bus is the law. Yes, there are some rules for divided highways and other scenarios but for the most part when a school bus has its stop sign out, you stop. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case in the United States and now some companies are fighting back against drivers who ignore the obvious stop sign and lights. Companies are installing multiple camera systems on their buses which start recording when the bus deploys its stop sign and turns on its lights. If you watch the CBS video below you can see just what can happen when a driver doesn’t obey the traffic rules when it comes to school buses.

While the technology being used here isn’t high tech but decidedly lower tech, it should hopefully prove to be effective in capturing violators. It’s disheartening to see the footage of some of these children being mowed down — even if they’re only bruised — by drivers who seemingly don’t care. It is a sobering reminder to be mindful of your surroundings and the traffic laws as you navigate through the streets. While you may be in a hurry to get to your destination, your impatience could take a life. We hope that more schools and school bus companies start installing these cameras as they could save a life and drivers should also be informed that buses will have these installed, that could cause them to think twice.

What do you think of these cameras being installed on school buses? Do you think it’s a good idea? Let us know your thoughts and comments below or on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
