Apple may be joining the civilized world with wireless charging on iPhone 8

Wireless charging has been a feature on many Android phones for a very long time and the tech isn’t new, although newer Android devices seem to be moving away from it. We’re looking at you Google Pixel and Pixel XL. Rumors have surfaced that Apple and Foxconn are experimenting and testing wireless charging for the upcoming iPhone8. The iPhone 8 is rumored to be made of all glass, reaching back to it’s iPhone 4 days, which means wireless charging could more easily be incorporated.

This seems to be changing with a Nikkei report that claims Foxconn is making wireless charging modules that may feature in the next model, if the company can produce them in quantity at the right price. Apple has been researching these technologies for years. Back in 2013 it filed details of a highly sophisticated wireless charging system designed to harness near-field magnetic resonance to put power inside phones, and the Apple Watch already uses such tech.

In March the NY Post told us Apple was working with Energous Corporation on a wireless charging solution. It is worth bearing these reports in mind given Apple’s move to adopt a Force Touch haptic Home button and a single Lightning I/O, as these steps mean the company is growing closer to new, completely wireless, waterproof iPhones.

These days fast-charging through USB Type-C is pretty quick and convenient but there are still users who want wireless. Charging through the Lightning port is fairly quick as well, not as fast as fast-charging but not horrible either. Adding wireless methods to the iPhone 8 might give Apple some new buyers but I can also see Apple moving to USB Type-C. The new MacBook lineup only has USB Type-C ports and the current iPhone lineup will not plug into these ports without an adapter. Apple could incorporate wireless but also change the Lightning port to a USB Type-C port as well. It’s going to be an interesting evolution for Apple as they start finally incorporating some of the tech that has been available for years.
