There’s nothing like a little bribery to entice users into trying your service and a new Apple TV just might entice a few. That’s what Variety thinks could happen according to some customer support documents that have been unearthed. According to these documents, users who sign up for three months of DirecTV Now service will score a new Apple TV and those who sign up for one month score an Amazon Fire Stick. Both devices will have the DirecTV Now app installed but of course every other app they offer will be available.
With streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu gaining a lot of traction over the past years, companies like DirecTV and AT&T are looking for a foothold in the same space. Cord cutting has become all the rage and subscribing to normal cable and satellite service is becoming less useful. Sports are the one area cable and satellite still hold the advantage for some users. Though it could be argued a nice HD antenna can get you the major networks for many sports and you could stream the rest of your content.
The reality is, the large cable and satellite providers are trying to get into a place where they’ll remain relevant in the future. Offering up a free Apple TV and Amazon Fire Stick is at the very least going to entice some to check out the service. USA Today reached out to AT&T for comment on the rumored deal but the company declined to comment on the situation.
