Apple’s new picture book will cost you $299 – seriously

Apple isn’t known for selling its hardware for pennies and that high price tag seems to follow them everywhere. The company is releasing a coffee table picture book just in time for Christmas that will set you back $299USD. Seriously, I can’t decide which overpriced item to buy this Christmas, Nike’s new sneakers or Apple’s new picture book, #sarcasm. The new book is being marketed as a showcase for Apple’s design over the years and it certainly looks like a quality made item.

To be fair, the book is also being offered at a $199 price point but in a smaller 10.20″ x 12.75″ version, the more expensive one is 13″ x 16.25″. Both books are linen bound, hardcover, and contain 450 photos of key Apple products throughout the company’s history. The photos inside were taken by Andrew Zuckerman. Jony Ive had this to say about the book:

HOW TO: Change system date in OS X ...
HOW TO: Change system date in OS X from Terminal

While this is a design book, it is not about the design team, the creative process, or product development. It is an objective representation of our work that, ironically, describes who we are. It describes how we work, our values, our preoccupations, and our goals. We have always hoped to be defined by what we do rather than by what we say.

We strive, with varying degrees of success, to define objects that appear effortless. Objects that appear so simple, coherent, and inevitable that there could be no rational alternative.

So there you have it, perhaps a good gift for the extreme Apple lover in your life, albeit an expensive one. What do you think of Apple’s new picture book? Would you pay $299USD for a bunch of pictures of Apple products? Let us know your thoughts and comments below or on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
