It’s been rumored for quite some time and it seems that today is finally the day! Netflix has officially announced offline mode for downloadable content: take your favorite shows with you anywhere via your tablet or smartphone. The company broke the news to the world via Twitter:
Airplane mode. Road trip mode. Stuck-in-the-subway-for-20-minutes mode. Your favorite stories are now available for download any time. pic.twitter.com/g7QZA3TyE8

You’ll soon start to see a “Download” button on some of your favorite TV shows and movies from the streaming service. Netflix will be starting with some of their Netflix Originals for pretty obvious reasons, though they do hope to expand the service to other shows and movies in the future. For a start though, there are worse ways you could go than Netflix Originals. The streaming service has had a pretty great record lately with their original programming.
UPDATE: We’ve checked out the updated app in Canada and can confirm that the shows available for download and offline viewing extend way beyond the Netflix Originals. Shows like The Equalizer, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Mr. Right, Better Call Saul, Fury, Breaking Bad, The Office, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and a bunch of others join the large Netflix Originals selection.
With shows like Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, The Crown, Marvel’s Luke Cage, Narcos, and many others there’s undoubtedly something that can help keep you entertained while travelling, or otherwise in places with no wifi. Personally, I have some shows I need to catch up on, so the timing of this release might be perfect for an upcoming trip. The new feature is included in all plans and you can get started with Netflix offline mode provided you’re using a device running iOS 8 or Android 4.4.2 or later, and have updated to the latest version of the Netflix app.
