No Man’s Sky Foundation Update brings first major update since launch

No Man’s Sky has had quite a turbulent last couple of months since launching back in August (though some people were still quite entertained), and now after months of nearly complete silence from developers Hello Games, the Foundation Update — the first of “many” free major updates — has been released.

This title has had a plethora of issues and negative feedback from consumers since its original release. No Man’s Sky was heavily promoted on platforms like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert before its launch by Hello Games CEO Sean Murray, who promised many amazing aspects of the game, including a vast number of original and procedurally generated planets to explore, showing an awe-inspiring and always changing range of varying ecosystems, wildlife, and plant life for the player to explore and interact with. There was even mention of a multiplayer element where players could theoretically run into each other during their adventures, however, Sean Murray stated that due to the scope of the game, this would be near impossible based on the huge amount of different planets in the game universe.

Upon release, players were quite disappointed to find the end result being less “star lord the galaxy explorer”and more “everyday space farming simulator.” The game was noted for its near-constant need to farm materials in order to progress and build new equipment, which led to being the main objective of the game, as players farmed supplies in order to upgrade their equipment and ship in order to eventually reach the centre of the galaxy, and complete the main story, or lack of story to be more precise. This resulted in bland and repetitive gameplay for the course of the entire game with little else for the player to do.

After the massive influx of negative reviews from critics and consumers alike, Hello Games went into a quiet slumber on social media and made no attempt to address or rectify any of the prevalent issues, nor did they respond to any requests to be interviewed or explain the situation. This is quite odd for a game company as it does not instill trust between the consumer and developer, ultimately leading to a large number of refund requests from gamers.

However, as of the 28th of November 2016, all of this changed as a substantial update was released for the title, offering a number of different game modes and tweaks to the game to provide a better user experience.

This update comes to us in the form of update 1.1; better know as ‘The Foundation Update.’ This update expands the number of game modes to 3, which includes a normal mode, survival mode, and creative mode. Normal mode is the basic vanilla experience, being essentially the base game as it has always been. Survival mode changes the user’s experience of the game, providing a much more challenging experience. Lastly, the creative mode allows the player unlimited freedom without limits, and the ability to build a “huge” base within the game.

The aforementioned base building aspect is what will likely draw new and previous players back into the title. The player is now able to find an abandoned outpost and claim it as their own, allowing the player to “Construct your homestead for shelter, using modular structures and decorations, replicated from resources gathered while exploring.” Base building even allows players to recruit various lifeforms to undertake various research roles in farming, engineering, weapons, and science.

Players are now able to farm their own resources inside their bases, along with being able to purchase huge freighters to transport and sell a bigger quantity of said resources. A new range of updated resources and technology have even been added to the game for players to discover.

A large amount of tweaking has been done to the game’s user interface, making the UI more readable for players and allowing for a better user experience. Some changes include new arrow indicators to emphasize shield and life support levels, the ability to view your current objective at any point in time with the click of a button, color tinting and various other artifacts have been removed from the UI to clean it up. There is also a hugely impressive amount of patch notes to delve into, you can view the entire list of official patch notes below:

It is good to see that Hello Games’ silence over the last few months has not been in vain and that there was clearly a lot of work going on behind the scenes, along with listening to the complaints against the game. It remains to be seen if the huge amount of changes to the game will result in an overall better game for consumers, or if this will be the start of a new evolution for the title, culminating in No Man’s Sky becoming the epic space simulator it was originally promised to be.

Will this be enough to bring back previous players, and draw in newer players? Only time will tell. What are your thoughts on this recent update? Will it be enough to keep you playing the game? Let us know in the comments section below or on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.
