Rogue One is coming in just a few days and one of the things that will make the film special is the creatures. This short featurette goes inside the Creature Shop and gives us an awesome behind the scenes glimpse at how the Creature Shop creates these amazing works of art. Back when the original Star Wars films were made, the use of digital characters wasn’t easy and much of the film relied on people in costume or stop-motion figures. Movie effects have improved and we can do way more with digital these days than ever before, but the Creature Shop is definitely special.
Creating creatures who can be filmed in real-time truly makes a movie even better than inserting them digitally. There are times when digital is the better way to go but having that physical form there makes for a better story and shot — in my opinion anyway. Some might argue that George Lucas himself went a bit nuts with digital when he remastered the original Star Wars some years ago. There were some choices he made that weren’t so pleasing to hardcore fans.

The argument can go on for days over the benefits or drawbacks of enhancing the original films with digital, but what’s done is done and Rogue One is upon us. We’re excited to see the new film, but we’re also excited that real creatures are being created as they once were before.
