The Circle might make you think differently about tech companies

Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, and John Boyega star in The Circle, which is based on Dave Eggers book of the same name. Watson’s character (Mae) is hired on to the world’s most powerful tech company, which at face value seems to be someplace to do good. As Watson enters the world of The Circle the world unfurls in front of her and she realizes the company is more powerful than anyone realizes.

While the story is fictional, there have been comparisons made to Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and other tech companies. Companies such as these are in the business of data mining. The more Google knows about you, the more it can sell you things. Every day we agree to Terms and Conditions we never actually read and then wonder why Facebook knows so much about our lives. The internet is this century’s wild west and tech companies aren’t always black and white about how they’re using your data.

Whatever your opinion is about the current state of data collection by companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Twitter. The Circle certainly looks like an amazing film that could be a little too close to reality.

What do you think about The Circle? What do you think about tech companies and the mining of user data? Do you think it’s possible that Google, Facebook, Apple, and others are mining more than we think? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
