The Fate of the Furious trailer full of mayhem and betrayal

The Fast and the Furious franchise has always been about putting family above all else. With the full trailer release of the eighth installment in the serious, it looks like a betrayal of those family values is going to be front and center in The Fate of the Furious. I suggest you watch the trailer above before reading further.

Of course, the trailer starts off in typical Fast and the Furious fashion with the team driving some fast cars escaping from some type of incident. As the team escapes and splits up less than a minute in, we get a good taste of the main plot and theme of The Fate of the Furious. We already knew that Charlize Theron would be the new baddie in the latest installment of the series, but there was no indication that one of the Fast and the Furious family would be betraying the rest of the team and siding with her — especially with the extended teaser which released earlier this week dripping with “family above all else” talk.

So when none other than Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) turns on the others, you can bet there’s more than a few Fast and the Furious fans wondering what the heck is going on. The rest of the trailer gives us glimpses into a bit more of the plot, and also unveils that the rest of the team will be teaming up with Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) — the villain from Furious 7 — in order to help take down Toretto and Cipher (Theron).

The Fast and the Furious movies have never been Oscar-worthy contenders, but from the get-go you can’t deny they’ve been full of fun, action, fast cars, and that supposedly unbreakable familial bond between the team. I’m certain there’s a logical explanation or twist to explain why Toretto turned on the team he’s always considered family but we’ll have to wait until April 14th, 2017 to find out why. Then again, The Fate of the Furious is the first of the final three movies in the Fast and the Furious franchise so it’s plausible Toretto’s betrayal could be extended into the ninth and/or tenth installments.
