Music legend George Michael has passed away

George Michael launched into stardom with the 80’s group Wham! and quickly rose to entertainment prominence. While it can certainly be said that not everyone really enjoyed Wham!’s music or the solo material George Michael produced, it is undeniable that he left a mark on the entertainment industry. Now, the BBC is reporting that George Michael has passed away and the family is, of course, asking for respect of privacy.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” read a statement sent to USA TODAY by Michael’s London-based publicist, Connie Filippello. “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

The Christmas season is traditionally thought of as a time for love, laughter and family. It’s heart-breaking to see the Michael family having to go through the loss of their loved one over an otherwise festive period. There has been no cause of death announced and the police are treating the case as an “unexplained death.”  They do say there doesn’t seem to be any sign of foul play but for now, the cause is under investigation.

I certainly remember Wham! and George Michael’s solo material growing up in the 80’s and 90’s (“Faith” is especially vivid). I never was much of a fan but the Techaeris staff and my condolences go out to the Michael family. Leave a comment below or let us know on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ how you feel about George Michael’s passing. Were you a fan? What were some of your favorite memories and songs from Wham! and George Michael? Do you have a message of sympathy to the Michael family?
