After a pretty decent year of Netflix Original Series and other movies and shows, it’s time to take a look at what the streaming service has in store for 2017. Just a reminder that shows coming to the U.S. only will be marked with (US), and likewise for shows coming to Canada (CA) only. If a show or movie isn’t marked with either US or CA, it will be coming to both services. Netflix has been kind enough to indicate which shows are available to view offline as well, which we’ve indicated by marking them with ⇓ after the title.

Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (Season 2) (CA)

January 6th
One Day at a Time (Season 1) ⇓
A reimagining of the Norman Lear classic, centering on a Cuban-American family. Our heroine is a recently separated, former military mom (Justina Machado) navigating a new single life while raising her radical teenaged daughter and socially adept tween son, with the “help” of her old school Cuban-born mom (Rita Moreno) and a friends-without-benefits building manager named Schneider. The 13-episode first season of One Day at a Time is produced by Act III Productions, Inc., Snowpants Productions, and Small Fish Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television. Norman Lear, Mike Royce, Gloria Calderón Kellett and Michael Garcia are executive producers.

Degrassi: Next Class (Season 3) (US) ⇓
This season will follow a group of high school juniors and seniors from Degrassi Community School, a fictional school in Toronto, Ontario, and depicts some of the typical issues and challenges common to a teenager’s life. This season will pick up a couple of months after the season two finale and begin a new school year. It will tell the stories of a new generation navigating high school drama with groundbreaking stories such as cyber bullying, abortion, depression, mental illness, dysfunctional families, sexuality, online harassment, feminism, racism, racial discrimination, life-threatening diseases, and drug use. It also continued to target the new post-millennial teen cohort known as Generation Z (synopsis from Wikipedia).
January 13th
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (Season 1) ⇓
Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans — Violet, Klaus, and Sunny — whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents’ mysterious death. The eight-episode series is a Netflix original production, executive produced by Emmy Award winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler, and also stars Patrick Warburton (Lemony Snicket), Joan Cusack (Justice Strauss), Malina Weissman (Violet Baudelaire) and Louis Hynes (Klaus Baudelaire).

Historia de un Clan is an Argentine TV series made in 2015 by Telefe, starring Alejandro Awada. It is based on the 1980s exploits of the Puccio family who kidnapped and murdered people in Argentina during the 1980s (synopsis from Wikipedia).
The Investigator: A British Crime Story ⇓
In June 1985 Carole Packman, a wife and mother mysteriously disappeared and has never been seen since. Her husband Russell Causley is now serving a life sentence for her murder, yet no body has ever been found. Throughout the case he pleaded his innocence and refused to talk. Mark Williams-Thomas re-investigates the disappearance of Carole Packman. With the help of neighbours and friends, he retraces Carole’s last known steps (synopsis from IMDB).

Frontier is a Canadian-American historical drama television series co-created by Brad Peyton, Rob Blackie, and Peter Blackie, chronicling the North American fur trade of the 1700s (synopsis from Wikipedia).

Terrace House: Aloha State (Season 1: Part 1) ⇓
The camera follows six strangers, including a model, a furniture maker and a “ukulele artist,” who live together under one roof in beautiful Hawaii. Cast includes Reina Triendl, Ryota Yamasato, and Yoshimi Tokui.
